Escape from Armageddon

DAY FORTY-FIVE: Sunday 14th February  2021:

Yesterday I escaped from ARMAGEDDON. I really did. I escaped for the devil aka Microsoft which set out to destroy my challenge to write one million words. I escaped not on my own account and certainly not with my own efforts but with the help of two friends.

The laptop I am using to write my stories and one million words I purchased from Argos around eight months ago, certainly less than a year ago. When I tried to use the laptop I found the Windows operating system needed to be updated. A friend sorted it for me, the same friend who rescued me from the fires of hell yesterday. Now it appears that while I paid for the laptop to come with Microsoft Office installed and subscribed to for a year part of that year was used up while the laptop was sitting on the shelf at Argos. Without any warning Microsoft Word stopped working !

Do you remember a time when a computer came with Office installed and operating indefinitely ?  These days if you go to the like of PC World they will sell you a PC with Office as an optional extra. They will then charge you to install the system.  It’s a bit like going to a dealer to buy a car. The dealer asks if you would like the optional extra of wheels for your car ?  YES !  Would you like us to put the wheels on the car or would you like to take them home and do it yourself !  Argos did not work like that for my laptop. It sold me a machine that did not work so I had to get help with the update. Then it sold me a machine with one year of Office subscription but with several months expired.

Facing a nervous breakdown and the failure of my writing project I called out for help. My friends answered and sorted everything. Next week I am also collecting from them a backup laptop.

Armageddon – SOD OFF !  Argos – I will never be so silly as to buy a laptop from you again !  Microsoft – evil personified.

So SMILE OF THE DAY:

F.E.A.R has two meanings. Forget everything and run. OR Face everything and rise. The choice is yours.

Now with my revitalised laptop I have so far written 327,329 words. Getting to half a million is a milestone. According to Plan A which would have me write the million by the end of the year I need to hit half a million by Wednesday 30th June. I would quite like to write two million words rather than just the one million which means I need to hit the half million by Wednesday 31st March. To do that I need to write 3, 754 words a day.  Eas-peasy-Japanesey ! BUT could I hit the half million by the end of February ? That would mean11,515 words a day. Mmmmmm!  Let’s see what happens today.

THE SECRET DIARY OF AN OLD MAN AGED THIRTEEN AND THREE QUARTERS has 9,490 words so far written. The entire story from where I am right now to the final full stop is in my head. Let’s see if I can finish it today.  The ending, I will let you into a secret, leads into a sequal THE SECRET DIARY OF AN OLD MAN AGED SIXTEEN AND THREE QUARETERS. 16 ¾ when was I that age ? August 1967 – THE SUMMER OF LOVE ! I think there is a story and a bit of fun there do you not.

Hey today – 14th February St Valentine’s Day THE INTERNATIONA DAY OF LOVE. Check this out: https://www.mixcloud.com/david-ashford3/milton-keynes-city-of-love/

So what was happening ON THIS DAY ?

14th February 1961: The discovery of the chemical element 103 Lawrencium is first synthesised at The University of California. What the heck is Lawrencium ?

14th February 1966: The Australian currency is decimalised. Silly people.

14th February 1989: Union Carbide agrees to pay $470 million to the Indian Government for damages it caused in 1984 Bhopal disaster.

14th February 1989: Iran issues a fatwa encouraging Muslims to kill Salman Rushdie the author of The Satanic Verses.

14th February 2005: YouTube is launched.

Now come on Wikipedia let’s see if we can find some people who were born on 14th February who I have actually heard of. YES here’s one….

14th February 1951: Footballer and manager Kevin Keegan was born.

14th February 1975: P G Woodhouse, born 1881, died.

Yesterday in Britain there were 13,308 further cases of china virus and 621 deaths. Locally where I live 55 new cases and two deaths.

I hear talk of a national memorial day. That would be lovely. I hear people demanding an end to lock down. That is sad. In so doing they are demanding more deaths. I hear of the government saying help has to be given to poorer countries to help with the vaccine. That is special.

831 words so far here today on Dave’s Diary. Long way to go to meet 11,515. I’ll sign off and get cracking on THE SECRET DIARY OF AN OLD MAN AGED THIRTEEN AND THREE QUARTERS.

Speak again tomorrow.

Dave
